Hannah’s Prayer?

Posted by Hannah Venable in Uncategorized  Tagged 1 Samuel 1-2:11

I certainly enjoyed John’s teaching on 1 Samuel 1-2.  It challenged me to make sure my heart was truly open to whatever God’s plans for me might be.

John commented on Hannah’s prayer and that it might not actually be the words of Hannah.  John suggested that perhaps these words were inserted after the fact to demonstrate the coming of the kings.  I am not so sure about this idea.  Here are some questions that I would love John (and anyone else) to discuss with me:

1.  Just as we believe that prophets received knowledge of the future, isn’t it possible for Hannah also to have received knowledge of the future?  In other words, just because she references the coming of the kings, couldn’t she have been prophesying?

2. Is there any Psalm that her prayer is really that similar to it?  Certainly, similar themes run through many of the Psalms.  Could that be that there was a certain form and structure to Hebrew poetry though?

3.  While many of the themes are more abstract, doesn’t verse 5 seem to connect directly with Hannah’s situation?

Love to hear your thoughts,

Hannah Venable
